Herman MEDLEY

January 14, 1921 — November 7, 2006

McMinnville resident and Dekalb County, TN native Herman Medley, age 85, was born January 14, 1921 and died November 7, 2006 at his residence following a brief illness.  The former owner of Warren County Furniture, he was a member of the American Legion Post 173, VFW Post 5064, McMinnville Evening Exchange Club and First United Methodist Church.  Mr. Medley was a graduate of Baxter Seminary in Baxter, TN where he worked his way through school.  He served in the United States Navy during WWII.  Most of his duty was in the Atlantic Ocean aboard the U.S.S. Daran, transporting troops to the European Theater of Operations of North Africa.  He made thirteen trips across the Atlantic.  He also served in the Pacific on the S.S. Jean Lafayette transporting wounded Marines who had not had their shoes off in a month.  Mr. Medley was discharged from the Navy February 1, 1946.  He was the son of the late Cody and Dollie Carter Medley.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Carter West Medley and brothers-in-law, Jim McPherson, Hugh Stewart, and Joe Stewart.  He was married to Jane Stewart Medley of McMinnville.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Jackie Medley of McMinnville;  granddaughter, Kate Medley;  step-grandson, Terence Clabo of Charlottesville, VA;  two step-great-grandchildren, Cullen and Kalab Clabo;  sister, Maggie McPherson of McMinnville;  brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Jewell Medley of Smithville, TN and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Stewart of Huntsville, AL.  Funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2006 in High's Chapel with Dr. Robert Case and Dr. Steve Angus officiating.  Burial followed in the Gardens of Memory with full military honors administered by the American Legion Post 173 and VFW Post 5064.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Neighbor Program at First United Methodist Church.
