Charlene Mayes SMITH

McMinnville resident and Warren County native Charlene Mayes Smith, age 81, was born April 26, 1925 and died July 16, 2006 at her residence following an extended illness.  A self-employed bookkeeper and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Mary Pearson Mayes.  She was first married to James Arnold Smith who preceded her in death September 22, 1974 and married second to John Eugene "Buzz" Smith who preceded her in death in December of 2000.  In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, George Mayes and three sisters, Carrie Blanks, Lucille Blankenship, and Frances Bell.  She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Merv Whittenburg of Murfreesboro, TN;  grandchildren, Holly and Adam Coggin of Murfreesboro, TN and Mitchell and Ashley Whittenburg also of Murfreesboro, TN;  great-grandchildren, Slater Coggin, Lizzie and Jaxson Whittenburg;  two brothers, J.W. "Willie" Mayes and Howard Mayes both of McMinnville and two sisters, Edna Woodlee and Betty Walker both of McMinnville.  Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Westwood Church of Christ with Julian Goodpasture and Bob Deason officiating.  Burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery.
