Memphis, TN resident and DeKalb County, TN native Maxine Hayes Bergjans, age 86, was born June 17, 1922 and died September 6, 2008 at her residence following an extended illness. A retired employee of Kroger in Sparta, IL, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Sparta, IL and a member of the Protestant Faith, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Vada Austin Hayes. She was married to Cornelius Bergjans who preceded her in death September 1, 1990. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and John Thomas Hayes and two sisters-in-law, Vern Hayes and Betty Jo Hayes. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Lorene Harmon of Atlanta, GA; daughters and son-in-law, Sharon and Al Braun of Missouri and Sylvia Cox of Memphis, TN; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Dr. Thomas Parker of Lebanon, TN and Betty and Harry Dunn of McMinnville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Hayes and Don and Lucille Hayes both of McMinnville; Frank Hayes of North Carolina and Jimmy Lee and Sheila Hayes of Smyrna, TN; sister-in-law, Patricia Hayes of Michigan and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008 in High's Chapel with Tim Long officiating. Burial followed in the Stroud Cemetery.
