McMinnville resident and Warren County native Vergie Elizabeth Steele Gilley, age 85, was born October 28, 1922 and died February 26, 2008 at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN following an extended illness. A retired practical nurse at Warren County Hospital and a member of the Northside Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Maynard G. and Claudia Ann Warren Davenport. She was very proud of her nursing career and was an accomplished artist and quilter. She was married to Flavil Steele who preceded her in death and later married Howard A. Gilley who also preceded her in death. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Robert, Cecil, James, Clarence, George and Charlie Davenport and two sisters, Lola Holt and Fannie Fuson. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Myrna Steele of Hixson, TN, Bob and Barbara Steele and Carl Steel both of McMinnville and David and Laura Steele of Signal Mountain, TN; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Tony Rymer of Wimington, NC, Carolyn and Pat Patterson of Morrison, TN and Brenda Blackburn of McMinnville; step-daughter, Jane Gilley Bouldin of McMinnville; step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Tommy and Doris Gilley of McMinnville; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Northside Baptist Church with Jim Hunt and Tim Miles officiating. Burial followed in the Providence Cemetery.
