Morrison, TN resident and Warren County native Johnny G. Smoot, age 87, was born March 23, 1921 and died April 20, 2008 at Kindred Hospital in Nashville, TN following a one-month illness. A retired inspector with Walker Lumber Company, a United States Army veteran of WWII and a member of the Trousdale Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Isaac Newton and Annie Mae Clancy Smoot. He served in the outfit called Merrill's Marauders during WWII receiving the following: Asiaic-Pacific Theater Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Silver Star, Purple Heart, three Presidential Citations and the Victoria Cross from theatre commander Lord Louis Mountbatten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Beatrice Bell, Martha Josephine Robinette and Anna Marie Gribble and brothers, Charlie Pat Smoot, William Clancy Smoot and I.N. Smoot, Jr. He was married to Winnie Evalee Austin Smoot of Morrison, TN. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Isaac "Jack" Smoot of McMinnville and Jim Smoot of Morrison, TN; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 in High's Chapel with Frank Bell, Carl Russell and Mike Ray officiating. Burial followed in the Trousdale Cemetery with full military honors administered by the VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
