McMinnville resident and White County native Walmas Mack Sparkman, age 90, was born April 8, 1918 and died September 3, 2008 at NHC Healthcare of McMinnville following an extended illness. A retired farmer, a U.S. Navy WWII veteran and a member of the Shellsford Baptist Church, he was the son of the late Jim Walter and Angeline Mayfield Sparkman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Tommy Hugh, Murphy, Frank and Andrew Sparkman; and two sisters, Pearl Jones and Annie Jo Mitchell. He married Esther Mae Roberts Sparkman on April 8, 1939. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Tyrone and Treva Sparkman and Mack Allen Sparkman, both of McMinnville, TN; one daughter, Judy Sparkman of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lonnie Sparkman of Fairport, OH. Funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 in High's Chapel with Jimmy Bond officiating. Burial followed in the New Union Cemetery (Hwy. 30) with full military honors administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
