Barbara Francis Henegar, age 76, died in Nashville in Alive Hospice on July 14, 2009 after a year-long battle with cancer. Born on April 6, 1933 in Warren County, TN, Mrs. Henegar was married in 1954 to Ulric Henegar. "I can't say enough about the loving care Barbara and I both received from the staff at West Meade Place nursing home, as well as from her nurses and doctors at St. Thomas and Alive Hospice", said Mr. Henegar, who also expressed his deep gratitude for the support of Nancy and Ernest Henegar of Lewisburg and May and Tommy Henegar of Nashville. A graduate of Warren County High School, Mrs. Henegar earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree from Middle Tennessee State University. She taught United States history in public schools in Memphis and Nashville, retiring in 1990 form Hillwood High School, where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. At her retirement, students and colleagues alike spoke of her dedication and influence. One wrote that after listening to Mrs. Henegar tell the stories of United States history, she could look at the American flag and "know exactly what it had been through." Another wrote of enjoying history for the first time and added, "As I go through life, if I can obtain half the respect that others have for you, I will be very happy." Yet another recalled Mrs. Henegar saying, "Students you are the hope of America." After thirty-four years of such inspiring teaching, Mrs. Henegar devoted herself to creating her flower garden, which became widely admired by neighbors and friends, and to traveling throughout the world with her husband. In addition to her husband, Ulric Henegar, Mrs. Henegar is survived by her sister-in-law, Martha Henegar of Deland, FL. A memorial service was conducted by the Rev. Janet Salyer, parish associate at Nashville's Trinity Presbyterian Church, at High's Chapel on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery.
