Franklin, TN resident and Warren County native Robert White Smartt, II, age 87, was born April 24, 1921 and died April 2, 2009 at West Meade Place in Nashville, TN. A civil engineer, a United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and member of the Episcopal Church, he was the son of the late Judge Robert White and Sarah Alma Roggli Smartt. Mr. Smartt was a bomber pilot with the 8th Army Air Corps, having completed thirty-five missions. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Robert W. Smartt, III. He was married to Joan Dudney Smartt who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William C. Smartt; daughter, Elizabeth Smartt of Chicago, IL; brother, John Smartt of Knoxville, TN and sister, Cornelia Hodges of Virginia. Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009 in High's Chapel with Rev. Battle Beasley officiating. Burial followed in the Gardens of Memory with full military honors administered by the VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
