Mr. Charles Bryan Stubblefield, 77, of Gastonia, NC died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC after an eight year battle with cancer. Born in Viola, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Herman P. and Mamie Hall Stubblefield. Mr. Stubblefield was a 1960 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a MS degree in Analytical Chemistry. From 1960 until 1967, he was an Analytical Chemist with PPG in Corpus Christi, Texas. He moved in 1967 to Gastonia where he was a Research Chemist and later Manager of Technical and Marketing Services with FMC Lithium in Bessemer City. He retired from FMC Lithium in 1997 after 29 years of service. Mr. Stubblefield was a member of Gastonia Church of Christ where he served as an Elder for over 15 years. He was the owner of the Stubblefield family farm in Viola, TN that has been in the Stubblefield family since 1814. As well as raising vegetables on the farm, he enjoyed woodworking, music and genealogy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stubblefield was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Stubblefield, Edwin Stubblefield and James Stubblefield. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carolyn White Stubblefield; son and daughter-in-law, James J. and Beth Stubblefield of Brentwood, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Jane C. and John Kaylor of Gastonia; brother and sister-in-law, Herman H. and Becky Stubblefield of Birmingham, AL; sister, Sarah Collier of Elgin, OK; grandsons, Grant and Bryan Stubblefield and Johnny Kaylor. Funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Viola Church of Christ, Viola, Tennessee with burial following in the Viola Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Caring House, 2625 Pickett Road, Durham, NC 27705.
