James Haskell BRYANT

April 7, 1912 — March 23, 2011

Knoxville, TN resident and DeKalb County, TN native James Haskell Bryant, age 98, was born April 7, 1912 and died March 23, 2011 at Ben Atchley State Veteran's Home in Knoxville, TN following a short illness. He was the son of the late Irvin B. and Mollie Guthrie Bryant. Mr. Bryant was a member of the McMinnville First United Methodist Church and a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Islands. He was retired from Arnold Engineering Development Center where he was an electrical foreman and a member of I.B.E.W. Local 2113. During his years in Manchester, TN, he was a city alderman, served on the local planning commission and was a member of the Lions Club. After retiring, he moved to McMinnville where he was active in Warren Masonic Lodge #125 F&AM, becoming a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was active in the Al Menah Shrine Temple in Chattanooga, TN. His work with the Shrine included arranging for burned and crippled children in the McMinnville area to receive treatment in the Shriners Hospitals. He was married to Dorothy Roland Bryant who preceded him in death April 16, 2009. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Floyd L. Bryant and five sisters, Ethel Bryant Lentz, Novella Bryant Bailey, Ida Belle Bryant Winfree, Lucinda Bryant Spangler and Pauline Bryant Murphy. He is survived by one daughter, Carline C. Bryant and husband Frederick D. Dickey of Knoxville, TN and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 in High's Chapel with Rev. Bob Case officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery with full military honors administered by the VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. A Masonic service was conducted during the visitation at 6:00 p.m. Thursday by Warren Lodge #125.
