McMinnville resident and Warren County native William Edward Byrd, age 90, was born October 3, 1921 and died December 15, 2011 at Raintree Manor Nursing Home following a brief illness. A machinist with AEDC and TVA and United States Army veteran of WWII, he was the son of the late William J. and Mattie Asmus Byrd. Mr. Byrd served in five campaigns during WWII including North Africa, France, Belgium, England and Germany. He was a charter member of VFW Post 5064, member of the American Legion and member of the Masonic Lodge in Dayton, TN. He was married to Jill Holland Byrd who preceded him in death. He is survived by one nephew, Raymond C. Pike of Geneva, OH; several great-nieces and great-nephews; two step-children, Janie Tenpenny of McMinnville and Ed Whiteaker and wife Debbie of Parrish, FL and his in-laws, the Holland family. Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 in High's Chapel with Willard Ralph, Jr. officaiting. Burial followed in the Shellsford Cemetery with full military honors administered by the VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.
