Helen Cambron ELKINS

October 15, 1914 — December 23, 2011

McMinnville resident and Fayetteville, TN native Helen Cambron Elkins, age 97, was born October 15, 1914 and died December 23, 2011 at Alive Hospice @ St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN following a brief illness. Mrs. Elkins graduated from Tennessee College for Women in Murfreesboro, TN in 1938 and did graduate work at Peabody College. She began teaching at City Grammar in McMinnville in 1936 and retired from the Warren County School System in 1980. For seventy-five years she served as organist for First Presbyterian Church and for twenty-one years served the Noon Rotary Club and pianist. In 1998 she was named an honorary member of the Rotary Club and designated a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1998 she was named Retired Teacher of the Year by the Retired Teachers of Warren County. In 2007 she was named Co-Woman of Achievement of the Year by the Southern Standard. She was active in religious circles, having been a member of First Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher for over fifty years. She was the daughter of the late Carl McPherson and Ruth Dance Cambron. She was married to Robert Aubrey Elkins who preceded her in death October 23, 1983. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Connell E. Horn of Nashville, TN; nephew, Stephen E. Horn of Nashville, TN; two nieces, Susan Lundy of Atlanta, GA and Diane Jewell of Taylors, SC and several great-nieces and nephews. A graveside service and interment was held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Mt. View Cemetery with Rev. Harry Green and Pastor John May officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or First Baptist Church both c/o High's.
