Mary Elizabeth Betty OVERTON

McMinnville resident and Hamblen County, TN native Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Overton, age 80, was born July 10, 1930 and died April 25, 2011 at River Park Hospital. A bookkeeper at Valley Feeds and member of McMinnville First Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Burl and Francis Purkey Shanks. She was married July 4, 1947 to Melbourn Davis "M.D." Overton, Sr. who preceded her in death February 6, 2004. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Neal Shanks and sister, Phyllis Shanks. Mrs. Overton served on several church committees and worked with the youth department, WMU and VBS. She taught Sunday school most of her adult life at Central Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN and McMinnville First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Mary and Martha Sunday School Class. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jane "Debbie" and Charlie Smartt of Viola, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Melbourn Davis and Nan Overton, Jr. of Brentwood, TN; five grandchildren, Byron Smartt of McMinnville, John Smartt of Morrison, TN, Jamie Smartt Parker of Taylor, SC and Taylor and Jackson Overton both of Brentwood, TN; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Parker and Emerson Parker both of Taylor, SC and Eric Smartt and Phoebe Smartt both of Morrison, TN; brother, John F. Shanks of New Orleans, LA; sister, Doris Jean Shanks of Knoxville, TN; sister-in-law, Peggy Marguerat of Knoxville, TN and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011 in High's Chapel with John May officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery.
