Mary Elizabeth Duckworth Womack

August 7, 1914 — July 25, 2014

Former McMinnville resident and Hot Springs, AR native Mary Elizabeth Duckworth Womack, age 99, was born August 7, 1914 and died July 25, 2014 at her daughter's residence following an extended illness. She was a faithful member of Westwood Church of Christ for more than fifty years, daughter of the late Robert Lee and Zaidee Loretta McFadden Duckworth and was married October 8,1942 to Robert Hudson Womack who preceded her in death January 22, 1994. Mrs. Womack graduated from Tennessee College for Women and went on to a career as an educator that spanned seven decades. She taught at several public schools in Georgia, Tennessee and McMinnville and Warren County until her first retirement in 1982. She later returned to the classroom at Boyd Christian School from 1999 to 2005. When she retired permanently at age 91, she was the oldest active teacher in the state. She did not completely give up teaching. She continued grading Bible correspondence courses for the Millington Church of Christ until 2012. She was an artist and instituted art classes at City High School in 1958, the first in McMinnville public schools. While an art teacher at City High School, she had a picture on display at the Parthenon. She was a well-known quilter and many of her quilts were sold at fund raisers. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Black House, LACE, and had served on the Board of Directors for Boyd Christian School. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Womack of Blaine, TN; sister, Elvie Mae Cayce of Wartrace, TN; several nieces and nephews; adopted granddaughter, Amy Kidwell of Rutledge, TN who was a devoted caregiver and friend for four years and cherished friend, Bethel Hissom. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2014 in High's Chapel with Mark Kitts and Coy Hathcock officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until time of service Monday at High's. Memorial contributions may be made to Boyd Christian School c/o High's.
