Mary Gayden Phifer

McMinnville resident and Davidson County, TN native Mary Gayden Phifer, age 82, was born September 27, 1931 and died August 2, 2014 at NHC Healthcare McMinnville following a brief illness. A retired time keeper with Oster and member of the Westwood Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late George T. and Elizabeth Denby Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Phifer Close and brother, Joe Burks Martin. Mrs. Phifer was married March 27, 1948 to Harold C. Phifer of McMinnville. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Steve Phifer of San Leandro, CA; two granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth Denby "Betsy" (Tim) Jackson of Signal Mountain, TN and Virginia Mathis (Josh) Witt of Chattanooga, TN; great-grandson, Charles Bryan Jackson and numerous other family members and friends. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2014 in High's Chapel with Coy Hathcock and Jim Welch officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 12:00 p.m. until time of service Monday at High's. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals On Wheels or Westwood Church of Christ Food Pantry both c/o High's.
