Dannye Ray George

October 29, 1947 — September 29, 2015

Dannye Ray George, 67, of McMinnville passed away on September 29, 2015 at Raintree Manor of complications from Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. He was born on October 29, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the eldest son of W.H. and Arlene Denton George. He spent his early childhood in the Madison Heights area of Detroit, where he enjoyed playing baseball in the street, listening to Detroit Tigers baseball games, and occasionally teasing his younger sister, Janice. Dannye moved to the Centertown community with his family in 1959. At age 14, Dannye met Jeanette Stanton, who became the love of his life. They were married December 21, 1968 in McMinnville. After graduating from Centertown High School in 1965, Dannye attended Freed-Hardeman University until 1967. Dannye then graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Memphis in 1970. He loved to reminisce about his time at all three schools, having made lasting friendships that brought him joy throughout his entire life. Later in 1970, he and Jeanette purchased his favorite car, a 1969 AMC Javelin, and welcomed their daughter, Christa. Dannye was a community pharmacist at Big-K, Fred’s, and Super D pharmacies in McMinnville, where his customers affectionately called him “Dan-O” and “Doc”. He frequently delivered prescriptions to his customers on his way home from work and opened the pharmacy after hours to fill their prescriptions in times of need. Dannye spent the last years of his career at Fred’s pharmacy in Woodbury, retiring after 38 years due to his declining health. Despite once bending a golf club around a tree in frustration, he enjoyed playing golf with brothers Bobby and Alan, brothers-in-law Charles and Tylee, and father-in-law, Fred. A passionate UT sports fan, he loved watching football games on television with family and turning off the sound so he could listen to John Ward’s play-by-play on the radio. Dannye loved music, especially that of Elvis Presley, and could often be seen playing air guitar in front of the stereo. He also enjoyed “talking pharmacy” with his sister, Connie, and telling jokes and stories with his brother, Gary. Most of all, he loved spending time with Jeanette, Christa, son-in-law, Chris, and his granddaughter, Zoe Raye. Dannye was a member of Centertown Church of Christ and the Tennessee Pharmacists Association. Dannye is survived by his wife, Jeanette Stanton George of McMinnville; daughter Christa Michelle George (Chris Wood) and granddaughter Zoe Raye Wood of Memphis; parents W.H. and Arlene George of McMinnville; three brothers, Gary (Debbie) George, Alan (Julia) George, and Bobby George all of McMinnville; two sisters, Janice (Tylee) Marcum of McMinnville and Connie (Tony) King of Murfreesboro; thirteen nephews and nieces; two great-nephews; and numerous cousins. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015 at Central Church of Christ with Perry Henegar, Dorris Hughes and Charles Stanton officiating. Burial will follow in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Friday at High's. Memorial donations may be made to the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation or to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.
