Betty Hoover Smith, wonderful, loving and selfless mother and grandmother, passed away on February 19, 2019 at the age of 92. She was born to the late Fred L. Hoover, Sr. and Ruby Ramsey Hoover on January 4, 1927. Betty graduated from Ward Belmont College and had a long, committed career in education. She was a librarian in the Warren County School system for 29 of those years. Counter to her time, Betty was the quintessential “tom boy” growing up. She excelled at any sport at which she tried her hand to include trick water skiing with her brother. Betty remained active and competitive in tennis and golf into her 70’s. Over the years, she was a sought-after doubles partner, often by those much younger. Being ambidextrous, her ability to switch hands with the racquet to retrieve an apparent winner frustrated many a competitor. She remained throughout her life a faithful and long-time member of the Viola Church of Christ. Betty was preceded in death by her son, Dave Hoover Smith as well as siblings, Sarah Faulkner Hoover, Dave Ramsey Hoover and Fred L. Hoover, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Mary Harold Hoover, son and daughter in law, Don E. and Paula B. Smith as well as grandchildren, Meranda Smith, Sarah Margaret “Maggie” Smith, Anna Smith and Sydney Smith. Graveside service and inurnment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2019 in Viola Cemetery with Kevin Deason to officiate. There will be no visitation or service at High’s. Family and friends are to meet at the cemetery for the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Viola Church of Christ. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
