Betty Jean Oakes Dean

Betty Jean Oakes Dean, age 83, a McMinnville, TN resident and Bledsoe County native was born March 10, 1936 and passed away March 3, 2020 at the Webb House in McMinnville following a short illness. She was the owner of BJ’s Custom Quilting, a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and the daughter of the late Hunter and Bessie Ward Oakes. She was married to Clarence Lee Dean who preceded her in death in 2014. She is also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Bobbye Oakes Cantrell, Jewell Oakes Reese, Harold, Raymond, Woodrow, D.C., Leonard, R.A., Turner, and Paul Oakes. Mrs. Dean is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Joe Shelton, Jr. of McMinnville; two grandchildren, T.J. and Emma Shelton of McMinnville, brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Dorthy Oakes of Crossville, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Monroe and Racheal Oakes of McMinnville and several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside service and interment will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in High’s Parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Tennessee, 5801 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
