George Allen Burke, Sr.

Spencer, TN resident and Davidson County, TN native George Allen Burke, Sr., age 84, was born July 16, 1940 and died November 22, 2024 at his residence following an extended illness. 

A veteran of the United States Navy, owner of George A. Burke Attorney at Law and member of Spencer First Baptist Church, he was the son of the late Mildred Binkley. Mr. Burke served in the United States Navy from 1958 until 1962. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University where he earned an Engineering degree and graduate of Nashville School of Law where he earned a law degree. George served as the McMinnville Warren County Executive Director and Industrial Recruiter for the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as an Industrial Recruiter for Montgomery County and retired from Caney Fork Electric Cooperative. George moved to Van Buren County in 1998 where he practiced law until his death and served as the first municipal judge for the city of Spencer. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Michelle Ann Large. 

He was married to Janet L. Burke of Spencer, TN on October 5, 1984. In addition to his wife, Mr. Burke is survived by children, George Allen "Skip" (Lea) Burke, Jr. and Michael Burke, both of Nashville, TN, Mark Large of Murfreesboro, TN and Katherine (Michael) Hazlett of Franklin, TN; six grandchildren; brother, John "Jack" (Linda) Burke of New Bern, NC and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2024 in High’s Chapel with Nathan Haynes officiating. A private burial will be held in the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN where military grave rites will be performed . Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at High’s. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spencer First Baptist Church Building Fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
