Joe Frederick Wanamaker

Joe Frederick Wanamaker, age 86, a McMinnville, TN resident and Grundy County native, was born June 4, 1934 and passed August 1, 2020 at his residence following an extended illness. He was a retired salesman with Standard Auto Parts and Morgan and Young Auto Parts, United States Army veteran, member of the American Legion Post 173, member of Shiloh United Methodist Church for 57 years and the son of the late Spiegle Wanamaker and Mae Merriman. He was also preceded in death by special grandparents, Floyd and Prudie Gross Wanamaker; sisters, Margaret Wheeler and Martha Wanamaker and grandson, Ben Barrow. Mr. Wanamaker was married June 25, 1960 to Evelyn Ann "Gran" Griffith Wanamaker of McMinnville, TN. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Debbie (Bob) Barrow, Greg (Dawn) Wanamaker, Steve Wanamaker and Greta Knowles (Corkey) all of McMinnville, TN; grandchildren, Chad (Marcie) Gillis, Brooke (Kevin) Caraway, Shelby (Chase) Judkins, Katie (Slayden) Rogers, Logan Wanamaker, Sarah Knowles (Christyan) and Marah Wanamaker; great-grandchildren, Gentry, Maggie, Maddux, Kenzley, Kiley and Keelyn; sister-in-law, Lola Griffith; special nurse, Nacey with Avalon Hospice and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving neighbors. Mr. Wanamaker was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed supporting and coaching his children and grandchildren in sporting activities. He was also an avid quail hunter. A graveside service and interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2020 at Philadelphia Cemetery in Grundy County with Danny Moore and Michael Lorance officiating. Full military honors will be administered by the American Legion Post 173 Honor Guard. No visitation will be held at High’s. Active Pall Bearers are Christyan Garcia, Chase Judkins, Slayden Rogers, Logan Wanamaker, Dale Griffith, and Hal Wanamaker. Honorary Pall Bearers are Ed Smith, Chad Gillis, and Lanny Wanamaker. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital c/o High's.
