Johnny W. Gibbs was born April 25, 1945 and passed from this life on September 9, 2022 at Cookeville Regional Hospital from a sudden illness. He was retired from Central Oil Company and the United States Army. He was a member of the Jericho Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by parents, Austin and Laura Mae Gibbs and sister, Beatrice Whitman. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vicki Gibbs; children and spouses, Chris and Amanda Gibbs of McMinnville, TN and Lori and Russell Summers of Pikeville, TN; grandchildren, Maddie and Scarlett Gibbs of McMinnville, TN, Victoria Conley of Rock Island, TN, Spencer Hale, Megan Hale, Noah Hale, Kaitlyn Summers and Trenton Summers, all of Pikeville, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Bill Koontz of Greenville, SC and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was proud of his family, his faith and his country. As a young man he enlisted in the United States Army and served his term with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division. He served in Vietnam as a paratrooper. In 1977 he enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard. While in the "Guards" he served as Platoon Sgt. Squad Leader, 1st Sgt. And Instructor at Tennessee Military Academy in Smyrna. In 2000 he was recognized for long and honorable service to armor and cavalry and was admitted as a distinguished Knight in the order of St. George. He received the Gold Medallion, which is the highest honor. Only 76 people have received this award, among them was George S. Patton. He retired with 31 and a half years with the rank of Master Sgt. Graveside service and interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Warren County, TN with Samuel Bain and Chris Gibbs officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at High’s. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com.
