Lucy Avery Smith, 86, of Smyrna, died Monday, February 15, 2021 at The Waterford Assisted Living in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Ms. Smith was born in DeKalb County, Tennessee to Henry Wright Avery and Sallie Mitchell Cope Avery on August 24, 1934. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six half-brothers, Bennie, Lucky, Drophia, Kelly, Luther, and Johnny Bufford Cope; two half-sisters, Julia Phillips and Cyrena Barnes; and one sister, June Ledford. Survivors include one daughter, Patsy (David) Meeks of Nashville; one granddaughter, Rachel (Jason) Blackburn of Smyrna; two step-grandchildren, Jayden and Joyelle Blackburn; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Special friends were Loyce Holcomb of Smithville, Louise Pearsall of McMinnville, and Donna Day of Spring, Texas. Ms. Smith was a prior resident of the Pomona Community of Cumberland County where she was a self-employed grocer for 29 years. After retirement, she became a resident of McMinnville in Warren County. Her hobbies included gardening, growing flowers, working puzzles, and needlework. When she was eighty years old, she entered three items in the Warren County Fair and won 1st place on all three. Graveside service and interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Keltonburg Cemetery in DeKalb County. Family and friends are to meet at cemetery.
