Marion Monroe Smith Sr, never met a stranger. A friendly, outgoing storyteller who was kind to everyone, he lived his life with enthusiasm, passion and a strong commitment to his faith.Marion Monroe Smith Sr, of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018. Born on December 16, 1933, in Louisville, Kentucky to Ralph Howard and Mildred Mae Zuberer Smith, he grew up in Kentucky, Illinois, New York and Ohio. After losing his dad at a young age, he worked the night shift to help support his family throughout high school years while also playing Varsity sports, but his favorite was football. He then attended Capital University in Ohio where he received a business degree and played football. He then joined the Army to serve his country and was stationed in California where he oversaw a tank brigade. Marion spent his career in the insurance business, working for Travelers and other insurance companies. He later realized a lifelong goal when he started his own insurance company. Marion also worked for Alan Williams & Associates to finish out his insurance career.He married Margaret Marie Pistole Smith on March 13, 1964 and they enjoyed a 52-year marriage, raising their three children in Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida. For the past 40 years, Marion lived in Cape Coral and Ft. Myers, Florida, where he attended McGregor Baptist and First Assembly of God churches. An ardent churchgoer, he believed his mission in life was to share his faith and help others. He volunteered with the homeless and when traveling stopped at churches throughout America to minister to pastors. A fervent patriot, he was proud of his service and loved to talk about politics and America’s bright future. He could often be seen on the roads of Fort Myers riding his recumbent bike given to him by his children on his 80th birthday. In less than four years, he rode over 4,000 miles.He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Jo Smith of New York and Michelle Smith Borio of Ft. Myers, FL and his three sons, Bryan Rho Smith of Chicago, IL Marion Monroe Smith Jr. of Fort Myers, FL and Michael Monroe Smith of Atlanta, GA and their families, including ten grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Karl Smith.The viewing and funeral service will be held Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McMinnville, Tennessee. The viewing will begin at 1 p.m., with a 2 p.m. funeral service officiated by the Reverend Harry Green.
