Ralph Lee Coleman

February 9, 1931 — December 19, 2020

Ralph L. Coleman of Viola, TN passed peacefully at home December 19, 2020 surrounded by his family. Ralph was born February 9, 1931 in Jacksonville, FL to Leroy Coleman and Annie Margarett Burns Coleman and attended Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville. He always had a passion for old cars, whether remodeling a vintage auto or racing his cars on Main Street in Jacksonville. Other hobbies included fishing with his dad, brother, sister, and other family members and maybe getting in a game of poker or two. His favorite hobby was always spending time with his “partner in crime” Tommie and his girls. After joining the Navy at the age of 17, Ralph served as ship’s photographer on several aircraft carriers during the Korean War including the USS Coral Sea and USS Tarawa (CV-40). Ralph completed 2 tours around the world while documenting the ships’ missions through photography. After his service was complete, Ralph joined AT&T/Southern Bell and retired in 1982 with 37 years of service. He began his career as a lineman and retired as Residence Staff Manager. While in the personnel department, Ralph actively supported women’s rights and was loved by everyone he worked with. While living in Jacksonville, Ralph and Tommie owned the first self- service car wash, Kwik Kar Wash, at Jacksonville Beach and after “retiring” to Viola, TN they became partners in Timberline Furniture at Smartt Station. Ralph was also an active community advocate helping with many projects including construction of the gazebo in the downtown square and donating his time to various fundraising opportunities, especially supporting nursing homes with his musical group. Ralph was an amazing self-taught musician who played piano, organ and most any string instrument he picked up. He loved all types of music and seldom missed an opportunity to play an instrument, dance or sing with friends. It was not unusual for Ralph to break into song whenever the mood hit. A dedicated member of the Moroccan Shrine and a 50+ year member of Ashlar Masonic Lodge No. 98, Ralph was also a life-long supporter of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. For 67 years, Ralph and Tommie were a true team leaning on each other through thick and thin. Ralph also was a devoted DAD who encouraged both of his girls to do their best and follow their own paths. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mildred Register and Betty Jean Massey; and niece, Faye Register. Ralph is survived by his wife and best friend of 67 years, Tommie Seamons Coleman of Viola, TN; forever grateful daughters, Debra Coleman of St. Petersburg, FL and Claudia Coleman of McMinnville, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Helen Coleman of Jacksonville, FL; aunt, Violet Parker of Jacksonville, FL; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to the compassionate professionals at Avalon Hospice, especially nurse Tina Walker, who allowed Ralph to begin his next journey surrounded with dignity and love. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ralph’s memory to Avalon Hospice - McMinnville, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or your favorite charity. A graveside service and interment will be held at Mt. View Cemetery in McMinnville, TN Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. There will be no visitation or service at High’s. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com. High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
