Bettye Claire Haston

Bettye Claire Woodlee Haston, a McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native, was born on Friday, December 13, 1935, and passed peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 27, 2021, after an extended illness at home. “Miss Bettye” was especially proud of her work as Secretary of Westwood Church for 12 years, and at F. C. Boyd Christian School for 4 years, with many happy years interacting with young students at both Westwood Preschool and Boyd. She also served as Secretary for County Executive Ray Moore. A member of the Church of Christ at Westwood for more than 50 years, she was an active volunteer in the community with a great passion for the arts, serving as a charter member of the Warren County Art Society, as well as Secretary and Treasurer. She volunteered for many years with the Warren County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, again serving as Secretary. In 2001, she was honored as a ‘Hometown Hero’ for her many years as a community volunteer. Bettye Haston is preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 66 years, Jerry Dean Haston, who passed on January 25, 2018. She is also predeceased by parents, William Hardy Harrison ‘Chick’ Woodlee and Leota Mae Blaylock Woodlee; two brothers, Edwin Harrison ‘Eddie’ Woodlee and William Bedingfield ‘Billy’ Woodlee; two sisters, Annabelle Woodlee Griffin and Reba June Woodlee Argo; nieces, Simone DeVon Binkley, Marilyn Argo, and Brenda Kay Argo Ersek; and two nephews, Bill Woodlee and Hardy Woodlee. She is survived by a son, Major General (Retired) Terry “Max” Haston and wife, Anne Brooks Haston; grandson, Travis Edward Haston and wife, Kimberly Mizell Haston, all of Knoxville; a sister, Neva Woodlee Binckley, of Sparta; several nieces & nephews; grandnieces & grandnephews; extended family, beloved neighbors, Avalon Hospice, and special caregivers also survive. Receiving of friends will be at High Funeral Home on Saturday, May 8, 2021 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., followed by a family graveside service and burial at Armstrong Church Cemetery in Irving College at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in her honor to Armstrong Church Cemetery in Irving College or nonprofit, The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project that serves Veterans in Mt Juliet, TN.
